Comedy
Definition
The obvious purpose of the
comedy genre is to make the audience laugh using the central element of humor. This genre originates from
Greek culture. Some comedy films can sometimes not have a very specific plot or story, but primarily aim to just be a funny watch.
Genre Conventions
Comedies are typically very
satire and are not very realistic. Any violence that happens in comedies are generally done so just to make the audience laugh and not for any other purpose. In contrast, genres like action and adventure use violence to thrill the audience and show the plot moving forward. Comedy films often use camere compositions and angles such as close-ups to capture the reactions for the characters which help develop humour. The lighting is usually very bright to make the tone more light rather than dark. Humorous sound effects can sometimes be used in these films to make the audience laugh.
Marketing
Comedy films will draw in their audience by putting some of the funniest scenes in the film in the trailer to quickly hook the audience and make them instantly entertained and hungry for more. They will also use famous actors that are known for being very funny in real life or in other comedy movies. For example, when the actor
Kevin Hart is in a comedy movie, the audience can instantly assume that the film will likely be funny because he is associated with funny comedy movies and is a comedian in real life.
Film Example #1
This comedy film is about a man who is a part time drug dealer who plans to take a fake family to Mexico and smuggle drugs over the boarder. This movie appeals to the natural audience by using everyday things such as an
RV. The characters in this film are extremely exagerated and unrealstic with the family including a homeless teenager, a striper, a middle aged man, and a strange boy. This film uses a lot of sexual and innapropriate humour which appeals to many people. This film is
rated R making the audience assume this movie will be funny as it will not use kid related humour, but adult humour that will appeal to a larger audience.
Film Example #2
This film is
hybrid genre film which is both comedy and an action movie. The main comedy and humour comes from the contrast between Lee (
Jackie Chan) and Carter (
Chris Tucker). The differences in race and culture create a unique chemistry between the two characters and is depicted in a very humourus way. A common way that this movie made the audience laugh was the language barrier between the cultures in this film. For example, The part in the film where detective Carter gets confused with the man in the dojo ("Yu, Mi, him"). The film uses a mix of
diegetic and non-diegetic sounds in the fight scenes to develop humour. This film is marketed using the actor Jackie Chan, which is a well known actor for his famous stunts and also is in various comedy movies.
